Guy Minnis
Director of Training
Guy Minnis is the owner and operator of
HARD TARGET Firearms Training. He is a retired detective with the Evansville Police Department (EPD) having served the citizens of Evansville for 33 years, 5 months, and 11 days. Guy has investigated numerous shootings over the years, including investigations of police involved shootings. In fact, Guy was involved in a deadly force encounter in 1985 and all of these experiences have given him a unique perspective on lethal encounters.
Guy has been a firearms instructor for 25 plus years and he was the Firearms Training Coordinator for the EPD from 2001 to 2005. During that time he was responsible for the EPD’s firearms training program where he completely revamped the program and lead the EPD into the 21st century. Guy was also fully responsible for designing and implementing the first ever three week firearms training program for the new Southwestern Indiana Law Enforcement Academy which trains newly hired law enforcement officers in Southern Indiana.
Guy is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana; he has an Associate of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management from Oakland City University. He is currently an adjunct instructor for ITT Technical Institute in the Criminal Justice Program, and he was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps as a Corporal, "0311" (grunt) in 1976.
Guy qualified as Expert with the M16 rifle while in the Marine Corps and qualified as a NRA Distinguished Expert with his duty handgun with the EPD. During Guy's police career, he carried revolvers, semi-auto pistols, a Remington 870 shotgun, and a Colt AR15 rifle. During his ten years with the EPD SWAT Team, Guy was a member of the entry team, the explosive entry team, and was the primary sniper. Guy used the venerable Winchester Model 70 scoped .308 bolt action rifle as a team sniper.
Although it has nothing to do with firearms training, it is important to mention that Guy spent 7 years with the EPD Bomb Squad as a Bomb Technician. Guy was trained in Huntsville, Alabama at Redstone Arsenal as a Hazard Devices Technician. While Guy was with the Bomb Squad, Guy and team members disposed of more unstable dynamite than at any other time in the history of the EPD.
