LEO Tactical Motor Unit – Handgun Skills

Guy Minnis, the Director of Training for HARD TARGET Firearms Training, use to be the Firearms Training Coordinator for the Evansville Police Department (EPD) and in that capacity he developed a firearms training program for the EPD Motor Unit (motorcycle unit).  Guy’s program trained EPD Motor Officers, Vanderburgh County Motor Officers, and other outside law enforcement agencies.  His Tactical Motor Unit – Handgun Skills training received rave reviews from the officers attending those classes.  Guy was able to develop this training course in conjunction with certified Motor Officer Instructors of the EPD.

In this course of instruction Motor Officers will learn how to quickly draw their weapon and get on target with accurate hits while dismounting from the low-side and the high-side of the motor unit.  Officers will also learn how to perform emergency dismounts, simultaneously draw their weapon, and use their motor unit for cover.  Officers will learn what is and what is not cover on the motor unit and because they are most likely going to be using these techniques against armed assailants that are inside of or using a vehicle as cover, officers will also learn what is and what is not cover on a car or truck.  Officers will have an opportunity to shoot into a junk car that has been towed to the range.  They will see what happens to the auto glass, door, shooting in the trunk, and other parts of the car.  What will your duty ammo penetrate on a car?  Do you know?  You should!

This is an eight-hour training day with a one hour break for lunch (total time for the day 9-hours).  Officers will be required to use their own motor units; they must wear their helmet and gloves, and use their duty gun belt and duty sidearm.  Each officer will need 400 rounds of practice type ammo and 20 rounds of duty ammo.  Knee pads and elbow pads are recommended.  Officers will be required to wear wrap around style safety glasses and hearing protection.
